Topic For Discussion
Question for all of my comic art friends. What are your thoughts on an artist offering to replicate a persons favourite Comic Cover as a painting in his/her own style and charging for this service? I have never seen this topic discussed but have seen instances where it has taken place.
1) Would this be wrong , and considered making money from some ones else's creation, even though the artist is using his own artistic skills to do the work?
2) If there are people willing to pay for this service and the artist is asked to do it, should he/she do it?
3) Is this a gray area?
4) Or is this ethically and morally wrong?
In my opinion as long as the artist isn't claiming to be the original artist and signs it in his or her own name then there's no problem. Buying original comic art, especially from "name" artists can be an expensive business so if someone can recreate, say, a Neal Adams cover at a fraction of the price the real artwork would cost then go for it. And as ayou said, it would be in the recreator's own style so not even a direct copy.
